Are Spec Script Sales Increasing?

At the suggestion of one of my blog readers – that would 1/3 of all readers – I have decided to post some graphs representing how specs are doing over the last three years. The first shows the number of specs for each of the first three months. The second shows specs as a percentage of all sales.

Number of specs sold by month and year. The number of specs seems to be increasing as 2009 progresses, however, the second graph tells a different story.

Spec sales as a % of total sales. Seems in 2009 spec sales are flat at around 18%.

Hi there,

Thanks for this. If you are posting this kind of analysis, I’m sure you will have more readers than you think. Or more readers soon, at any rate.

I guess the interesting thing to see in terms of trends, would be the percentage of all sales that were spec, adaptation etc over a series of years. Percentage in 07, in 08 and in 09.

Also the percentage of romance, action, sci fi etc over those years.

I don;t know if you have the base data to do this or not, but that would certainly be a fascinating analysis. And like I say, I think you would find yourself getting a load of readers if you were to post that sort of analysis.

Defy Gravity. Yes. Isn’t that what we do each time we sit down to write? Or is is alchemy? Some kind of magic, anyway.

Thanks again.
